1. Extending flex. The best way to make a flex longer is to remove it entirely and fit a new flex the correct length. IF you only need to make a temporary extension you must use a flex connector, it's the only safe way!
2. Fuses Most houses have fuses inside square pinned plugs and on the fuse board of the house. If several lights or sockets stop working a main fuse has probably gone. Look in the main fuseboard, usually located near your electric meter. The trend is towards circuit breakers which makes things easy because to restore the electricity simply turn off the fuseboard, press the button which has snapped out or switch the switch from off to on, then switch the fuseboard back on again.

4. Fuse types : 5 amp : white : normally for lighting circuits. 15 amp: blue : immersion heater : 30 amp : red : ring circuit for main sockets and cooker : 45 amp : green : for cookers or power showers.
5. Replacement flex : If an appliance has 3 core flex the replacement flex must also be 3-core flex. No shortcuts using 2 core flex!

7. It is not safe, to put a 2 pin plug on a flex with 3 wires!
8, Correct wiring (UK). Blue is neutral, brown is live, and green/yellow is earth. If you look at the plug with the pins facing away from you, neutral is positioned to the left, earth is positioned at the top, and live is positioned to the right by the fuse.
9. A blown fuse is a warning. If it blows again as soon as you fit a replacement there is a fault which must be attended to. Remember which appliance you switched on just before the fuse blew. Try unplugging it and see if that solves the problem. Are you running to many appliances off one socket and overloading it?
10. Electric blankets are normally fitted with a 3 amp fuse, not a 13 amp fuse. Always replace with the fuse recommended by the manufacturer.
